Daryl Pierson, the officer who was shot and killed Wednesday night on Hudson Avenue, is the first Rochester police officer shot and killed in the line of duty in nearly 55 years. However, in the past five years, he's the fifth Rochester police officer that has been shot by a suspect.
Most recently, Flamur Zenelovic was shot pursuing a double murder suspect Ralph Strong Junior in June of 2013. Strong shot Zenelovic in the area of Norton and North Goodman streets. Strong was sentenced just this week to multiple life sentences.
Two officers were wounded in another shooting in December 2009. Sergeant Daniel Brochu was shot in the leg during a home invasion at an apartment building on Driving Park Avenue and his partner, Officer Luca Martini was shot three times in the arm and chest. The shooters in that case, Nixon Elian and Marquis Parker, were convicted and are currently serving time.
Not far from where the officer was shot and killed Wednesday night on Hudson and Warsaw streets another officer was wounded in January 2009. Rochester police officer Anthony DiPonzio was shot in the head on Dayton Street. Doctors say it was a miracle that he survived. DiPonzio has since returned to the force on desk duty. Tyquan Rivera was convicted in that shooting and remains behind bars today.
