New York's state park system welcomed more visitors during this year's peak summer season.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office said Thursday that 36 million people traveled to a state park, campsite or historic site between Memorial Day and Labor Day this year, 700,000 more than the same period last year.
The state's campgrounds reported more than 470,000 overnight stays during the peak summer season, up from 460,000 the year before.
Cuomo says he's thrilled that more people are taking advantage of state parks. His office says outdoor recreation generates an estimated $33.8 billion in consumer spending in the state.
