Todd Baxter wins Monroe County Sheriff's race

November 08, 2017 07:03 PM

Todd Baxter defeated Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn in the race for Monroe County Sheriff as Democrats locally and nationally crushed competition on Tuesday.

Baxter, a former Rochester police officer and the former Greece police chief, easily topped O'Flynn by double-digits in the polls.

O'Flynn faced pressure for the county's handling of contracts for unions representing deputies and efforts to combat the opioid crisis. Baxter faced late challenges in the race with a controversial mailer that went out comparing him to President Donald Trump and a write-in campaign mounted by Gary Pudup -- who felt Baxter's personal beliefs didn't align with Democratic values.
