Water Authority reminds customers to demand ID after fraud cases result in stolen property

February 12, 2018 11:24 AM

The Monroe County Water Authority is reminding customers to demand proper identification from anyone stating they are from the Water Authority before letting them into their homes to read their water meter.

The reminder is being issued after two recent criminal reports were filed in Erie County. A man allegedly fraudulently stated they were from the Erie County Water Authority. The man showed a false ID, stating he was with the 'New York State Water Authority' and brought the homeowner in the basement to examine the meter and plumping.

While in the basement, his accomplice entered the home and stole property from the homeowners.

Executive Director of the Monroe County Water Authority Nicholas Noce says Water Authority employees will only arrive in vehicles prominently displaying the MCWA logo, will wear a uniform shirt with the logo, and have an ID that clearly shows the logo.

If you have any doubt about their identity, you are asked to contact MCWA at 585-442-7200 or 911.
