Olivia Hawes is an Eastridge junior who plays both softball and volleyball. When she's not on the court or out on the field, she's a high honor roll student who hustles just as hard in the classroom as she does on the diamond.
"I take a couple of advanced courses," Olivia says. "I take IB English and I take physics, stuff like that. I'm also in college seminar right now."
In fact, Olivia credits athletics for helping her build skills that she uses in her academic career.
"I notice a lot that I'm more of a leader type," she says. "Whenever we do group projects, I'm always the first person to make the first move. I guess I understand well how to work with others."
Although she's not exactly sure where she wants to go or what she wants to do, Hawes has her sights set on attending a four-year university after she finishes at Eastridge.
"I definitely want to work with people, and I definitely want to help people in some way. I kind of wanted to be a teacher but, I don't know, ever since I've started high school, I've kind of questioned it. It's still one of my top choices."
She's Olivia Hawes, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week presented by Monroe Community College and Five Star Bank.
