Ten players on Kara Cusker's basketball team are sophomores or younger -- that's why Kara felt she shined.
"We thought we'd be great leaders on this team considering there are so many young girls," says Kara. "It's an honor to be someone they could look up to and go to."
Kara is one of four senior captains on the Eagles and says that the way that the seniors made the younger players feel welcome and a part of a team-first basketball philosophy helped Irondequoit reach the Sectional championship game.
Kara says, "That's really a big part of what we've emphasized, as captains, is to play together and play as one even though there's such a huge age difference between us."
Kara's leadership extends far beyond the basketball court. She's a member of the National Honor Society and is very active in student council. This year she helped organize a fun night for senior citizens and a holiday party for inner city kids.
"I've found that it's really important, seeing their faces when they get their present or when they ask you to play a game with them, it's awesome," she says.
Keep up the great work, and congratulations Kara Cusker, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Monroe Community College and Five Star Bank.
