It's the sport that she loves and she wants to end on a high note.
"It's my senior season, I just want to go out there and kill it with my team," Mackenzie Mortimer tells News10NBC.
She led the Fairport field hockey team to the Sectional semifinals this year. She's the goalie on the team and has an interesting reason behind choosing that position.
"I love it, it's fun. I love being shot at with the ball because it tests all of my motor skills." But Mackenzie is far more than target practice for her teammates.
She says, "I never thought I'd fall in love with the sport as much as I have now. Over the past couple years I've had dreams of going to college and playing field hockey."
And dreams are about to become reality for Mackenzie. She's currently being recruited by SUNY New Paltz to play field hockey for the New Paltz Hawks.
When she gets to college, the National Honor Society member wants to study pre-med and hopes to become a pediatrician. And this is personal for Mackenzie: She was born with a thyroid disorder and she wants to help kids with what she went through. She says, "My pediatrician's passion for her job really influenced me and I've fallen in love with kids and medicine. What's better than that?"
Good luck and congratulations to Mackenzie Mortimer, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Nixon Peabody and the Ide Family of Dealerships.
