One of the hallmarks of a good teammate is going the extra mile to help those around you. This week's Scholar Athlete certainly goes more than just the extra mile.
"Germany, Switzerland, Iceland, Bora Bora, Kenya, Abu Dhabi," Olivia Keller lists off.
That's not a list of places she hopes to visit one day: Those are countries that Olivia Keller has already been too. When she's not globetrotting, the Pal-Mac senior is a three-sport athlete who helped Pal-Mac win a Sectional title in soccer as a junior last season. Olivia also played basketball and lacrosse for the Red Raiders.
Next year she hopes to study biology or pre-Med in college with the hopes of one day being a part of Doctors Without Borders and that's where the international travel comes into play.
"Seeing what other countries are like and how fortunate we are here in America made me want to put that together and Doctors Without Borders was perfect," Olivia tells us. "All these kids I meet that are my age or younger, they are so thankful for anything that they have and they're so willing to give so much even though they have close to nothing."
Olivia has better than a 100 average in school, but she says, while good grades are important, she doesn't fret over a missed assignment and is able to put things like that in perspective.
"There are people I've seen struggle to find food or water so it's not like while my academics are important to me, it's not the most important thing," she says. "It makes me want to get good grades for the learning part of it, not just the number attached."
Congratulations Olivia Keller, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Nixon Peabody and the Ide Family of Dealerships.
