"We worked really hard in practice and we worked really well together," says Pittsford Mendon senior Sara Lyons. "So we knew coming into games we would come out on top if we played the way we were going to play."
Some might call her overconfident, but then those people must not have seen Sara Lyons and Pittsford Mendon play basketball this season. The Mendon senior led the Vikings to an undefeated regular season and a Sectional championship -- her second Sectional title in basketball.
"We definitely dreamed that we would go all the way, especially since we were younger," she says. "We have been thinking about this for a while and going undefeated was just another thing on top of it. We were happy to make it to states together."
But success in basketball is just the beginning for Sara. She has already been a part of five Sectional championship teams with a chance for number six later this spring in softball. In fact, she says playing multiple sports has helped her get better in all three of her sports.
"It translates into a lot of the others, like reading the path of the ball and timing," she says, "in basketball you get defense and defensive stance and fast movement and all the sports that I play translate into each other."
The National Honor Society member will play basketball and study engineering at Wooster Polytechnic Institute next fall.
Congratulations Sara Lyons, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Monroe Community College and Five Star Bank.
