"The team worked so hard, I was speechless, I couldn't even take it in," says Annie Heyen, our Scholar Athlete of the Week.
That's how Annie felt after Bishop Kearney won the Sectional title in volleyball earlier this year -- a remarkable turnaround for the program.
"When I was on JV and the varsity team didn't win a single match or a game, they didn't win a single game in a match."
Now the focus is to cap off her senior season with another Sectional championship: This time in softball. Annie has started for the Bishop Kearney softball team all six years that she's been at the school and has been the starting catcher since eighth grade.
"I think catching is the underrated leader because everyone notices the pitcher, but in a way I'm controlling it, I'm making the pitcher look good," says Annie.
She's also a leader in the classroom. Annie is the valedictorian of her class and will study nutritional science in college next year -- a subject that is important to her.
"For close to six years now, I've been struggling with every diagnosed eating disorder," Annie says. "I'm stable now, but I'd like to use my past to help people in the same situation and get them out of it or prevent it from starting."
Congratulations Annie Heyen, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Monroe Community College and Five Star Bank.
