Alone on a court in downtown Rochester, Caroline Mollenkopf was hard at work practicing the sport that she loves. But it is more than just love of the game or an afterschool activity for her. The Mercy senior is ranked in the top ten in the nation in squash.
She'll attend Dartmouth next year and said she chose that school because of the squash coach. "He's super outgoing and loves squash, so that was the number one priority was the people I surrounded myself with."
Caroline has played squash for years and the sport often takes her to tournaments far from Rochester, which causes her to miss lots of school. But that doesn't mean she slacks in the classroom. Caroline carries a 4.0 GPA.
"Without the flexibility and understanding and support of my teachers, I wouldn't have been able to play the sport," Caroline says.
During the summer she volunteers at Horizons Urban Squash which is a camp that introduces kids in the City of Rochester to the sport.
"That's definitely an enjoyable time, seeing kids learn a new sport," she says. "I think it's rewarding to use what I've learned and be able to team them... It's cool to see them grow on the court."
Next year at Dartmouth, she plans to major in economics.
Congratulations Caroline Mollenkopf, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week presented by Nixon Peabody and the Ide Family of Dealerships.
