She's a leader on the basketball court, but it's what Braelin Scott does away from sports and the country that makes her our Scholar Athlete of the Week.
In a recent basketball game against Whitman, the Bloomfield senior scored her 1000th point- but there's more to Scott than what she demonstrates on the court.
"I want to make sure that I'm impacting people positively," she says.
Scott has served as the Bloomfield girls basketball captain for two years, and the soccer captain for three, but she demonstrates leadership in daily life, too. Holding a 3.9 GPA, the student council president and National Honors Society member tries to set an example in everything she does.
"I hope to lead by example, I feel like in order for someone to help, you'll just see someone helping or see someone doing something nice and you'll say, well maybe I want to do that. I feel like in order to grow as a person you have to help other people grow. That's how we grow as a community, and that's how we grows a world."
Scott took that motto to another level when she participated in volunteer school service trips to Cuba and the Dominican republic.
"The trips changed my life," Scott says, "We helped people in the Batays in the Dominican, and we helped environmentalists in Cuba, and it was just a beautiful experience."
After Bloomfield, Braelin says she wants to head to college, and wants her future career to make a positive impact in her community.
"I know that if I find something I'm passionate about- serving others, helping others, communicating with people- I'm going to love it. I'm really excited for what the future has to hold for me and I hope I continue to make an impact wherever I am."
She's Braelin Scott, News10NBC's Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Nixon Peabody and the Ide family of dealerships.
