Scholar Athlete of the Week (5/9): Jeff Wilson

May 09, 2017 07:22 PM

"I try and get a model of Old Hickory 243," says Jeff Wilson. "It's a thin handle with a thick barrel so I feel like I'm swinging a hammer."

It's safe to say that Jeff Wilson is more than just a little interested in the science behind wooden bats. The Greece Odyssey senior even wants to turn his passion into a career and one day make wooden baseball bats.

"I just love hitting, I think it'd be cool to join up with Easton or Louisville Slugger and tamper with the BBCOR and see how good you can make it before it becomes illegal and weigh it correctly."

He doesn't use a wooden bat during the high school season, but he does have a batting average better than .500 and that's led to an offer to play baseball at LeMoyne next year. Jeff plans on majoring in physics -- and as you may have guessed -- plans to utilize his degree to make wooden baseball bats.

Jeff tells us, "Based on the number on the bat, that's how it affects the handle weight, how thick the handle is, how thick the barrel is, how the weight is distributed, is it a cupped end or not, is it tapered hard or not... I pay a lot of attention to that."

Congratulations Jeff Wilson, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Monroe Community College and Five Star Bank.
