Spring is lacrosse season in Rochester, but many of our best athletes make their mark in multiple sports. This week's Scholar Athlete is a captain on the lacrosse field, but that's only the beginning.
"It's a little crazy at times, I'll go a week where I have three practices a day," says Melissa Camp.
And that crazy practice schedule seems to have paid off for Melissa. The Gananda senior is the captain of three different varsity teams and recently led the Panthers to the Sectional title in basketball.
"I'll go from soccer to basketball and back to soccer," she says. "I'll have weekends where I don't go home much, I'll go from practice to practice and a game occasionally."
Melissa is an all-around athlete who will play soccer in college next year and she says that the athletic versatility from playing multiple sports has helped her immensely. "I think it's important because if a coach needs to play you on attack or defense, if you can switch over, it gets you more playing time."
But it's not all sports for Melissa: Next year in college she plans on studying dietetics and nutrition. "I liked chemistry -- I'm taking AP Bio right now which is hard -- I like science. I like the hands on activities that we do."
Congratulations Melissa Camp, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Monroe Community College and Five Star Bank.
