Scholar athlete of the week 10/6/09: Rob Page

Anyone looks short compared to Rob Page. The Victor High School student stands seven feet tall.

He says, “I've gotten used to it people always ask how tall are you. I'm used to it I accept it, it helps a lot in sports.”

Rob stands head and shoulders among his classmates, carrying a 94 average with an interest in the sciences, maybe even pre med. Combine that with what page can do on the volleyball court, it’s no wonder UCLA has already offered Page a full ride to play next year. They are a national powerhouse in the sport so for Page it was a dream come true. “I was excited I was hopeful, I always wanted to go there. I was interested before they started talking to when the first letter came I was like 'yes’.”

Rob played soccer, football and basketball and joined the JV team in the ninth grade. He grew to 6’8” by the time he was a sophomore. “They are like 6’3” and 5’10”. I don't know where I came from, my mom played volleyball in high school, I was brought up in the sport.”

What makes Rob special isn't just his size, it’s what he's learned to do. It’s not settling for just being the big guy, he's learned to finesse his size and that's what's sets him apart. Page says, “If I see it I try to fix it I see film I'm working on not trying to be. I try to be the small person like in basketball I try to handle the ball to learn to pass and head outside I don't want to be the tall stereotype in a way I work hard to get out of that.”
