Scholar athlete of the week 10/20/09: Mary Cushman

Mary CushmanIrondequoit's Mary Cushman uses her free periods to get school work done. “My parents and siblings always made sure I stayed on track to keep up with everything.”

Mary carries a 92 average and she knows school is important because without, she could not pursue her real passion. Mary is a standout on the volleyball court and teams immediately recognize this dominating outside hitter. “I guess some people think I'm intimidating, I try not to be.”

This is her second home, a place she enjoys being every day. Mary has helped her team to become a dominate force in Section V volleyball. She started after in the 7th grade playing JV after watching her older sister play. “In the beginning I had to work to get the technique down, then because of my height it came naturally for her. Volleyball is my stress reliever after school or stressful weekend. I go to practice and forget about everything and just play.”

She also runs track as a way to stay in shape – which she does pretty well at. She won sectionals in the high jump last spring but its her skills on the volleyball court that caught the attention of the University of Maryland...she was sold when she visited the campus. She said, “It’s definitely a big jump. I think club volleyball prepares you for the college level so I think I'm set.”
