Scholar athlete of the week 10/27/09: Kevin Harrington

There's no doubt that McQuaid’s Kevin Harrington has a plan. “I've always been a fairly motivated student. My dad has always influenced me staying on top of things and that having a good average and it set good habits for me.”

Kevin thrives at McQuaid carrying a 96-average with a half dozen AP classes under his belt, his interest and eyes are on Wall Street.

Harrington said, "A few years ago I started following my dad's stocks a little bit and he would call me down to see how his stocks are doing things like that reading his Forbes magazine, I read a million times it just kept progressing until I figured that's what I should do."

Out of school, Kevin is equally as focused. “When other kids were focused on being a fireman or policeman, I knew sports were going to be my way to be where I wanted to be.”

Kevin has been on varsity since the 9th grade and captain for the past two years. McQuaid is ranked third in the state and ESPN has them ranked 20th in the country - Kevin is a big part of the reason why.

He said, “I knew right away this could be something I could play for the rest of my high school career. As I got older I thought I had a shot to a higher level I went on harder teams.”

Kevin would travel for soccer and e-mail dozens of colleges inviting them to his games and he caught the attention of one big one. “I would ask them to come to my game. I'd given them a resume and some credentials Harvard came and saw me play in June and asked me to camp and in mid-July they gave me an offer to be on their roster.” He gave them a verbal commitment.

Harrington said, “There's always going to be doubts but as long as you keep confident going forward working at it and stay positive, it should all be positive going forward.”
