Scholar athlete of the week 11/3/09: Jane Thomas

Jane ThomasMendon’s Jane Thomas doesn't shy away from hard work. While quiet and more reserved, her accomplishments speak loud and clear. Her 96-average includes 8 APs over the past two years. She excels in math and science. “I like it that there is one right answer, I'm not a fan of English I don't like writing math is exact I like that about it.”

When she's not doing homework, Jane relaxes with her pencil in a different way. The art room is haven of sorts; it’s where she can channel her creative side and express herself. “It's a good break from all my other classes which are reading and writing.”

But this is where Jane feels most at home. She is one of three captains on her soccer team, a title she wears proudly. “We have a small team and we're all really close we hang outside of practice the team work is just a big part of it I love the team.”

She’s played the game since she was five but last year Mendon enjoyed a Cinderella season with an unlikely run to the finals. She has led her team to another successful year as the team’s top scorer.

When she's not playing soccer, Jane runs tracks. Her team just missed states last year. It’s no surprise, the relay is her favorite. A team player, no matter what, she has a simple philosophy. “If you work hard it will pay off. It’s what you put in to it and it will pay off so you put your best effort in things and it will turn out in the end.”
