High school lacrosse sectionals are in full swing. The team getting attention both locally and nationally are the Fairport Red Raiders. The boys are 16-0 and face the Greece Lightning in Wednesday’s Class A Quarterfinals.
The Fairport Red Raiders consider themselves a family rather than a team. They sit undefeated and are ranked 18th in the country.
It’s hard to single out one reason. Their defense led by goalie Blaze Riorden held its three opponents to just 14 goals in three games last week. The team has only allowed more than seven goals just once this season.
Brian Martin, senior midfielder, said, “Our defense is what is working great right now they're keeping us in every game.”
Blaze Riorden, senior goalie, said, “It is the defensive collective effort. We are one big unit. We're not a bunch of kids out there we are a seven man defensive half and we're all playing great.”
Team chemistry is what Fairport Head Coach Mike Torelli relies on. Six years ago, he and his coaching staff decided to make their team a year round effort, adding off season activities and team building, so that Fairport could consistently compete in sectionals each year.
Torrelli said, “You don't have to look too far. Penn Yan and Irondequoit who consistently are in year after year and in the finals; even Pittsford, Penfield and Webster Thomas, it goes on. We needed to start figuring out as a program how we could be successful. When I say everyone, I mean everyone.”
Senior Derek DeJoe chalks the Raiders success up to trust and longevity.
DeJoe said, “We haven't ever split up. I remember being on the same line in my 5th grade youth season. We know each other and are going to have chemistry you can't beat.”
Fairport and Greece meet Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Fairport high school.
