A local golfer is back home ready for a new start. Pittsford Mendon's Gavin Hall returned this week after a bumpy start to his college career in UCLA.
Gavin Hall left his senior year as one of the top golf recruits in the class of 2013, but his full ride to UCLA took a turn and Hall decided the Bruins' program wasn't a good fit. Now he's focusing on the future.
When News10NBC caught up with Gavin Hall, he was back in a familiar spot—the driving range at Oak Hill. After graduating early and starting college in what would have been his final semester of high school, he wanted to transfer out of the program within weeks of arriving on campus.
Gavin Hall said, “Not many kids transfer. I spoke to my parents and coaches and realized if it's not getting better, I should find something else.”
Hall finished the quarter and will start fresh as a freshman in the fall. He is now re-looking at schools on his short list including Georgia Tech and Alabama with a different perspective.
Hall said, “I know the questions to ask, I know what will work for me and that's important.”
Hall cannot take part in spring junior events, but looks forward to playing in the Monroe Invitation, CCR Invitational and traveling to other amateur events. He missed last season due to a wrist injury. He also hopes to receive his diploma with his class and attend his senior ball. He calls the past 10 weeks an education and says he's right where he needs to be.
Hall said, “I need to stay focused and have a good summer and a college career and good things will wind up.”
Hall will also spend the spring semester on more college visits and hopes to have a decision soon about the fall.
