The Buffalo Sabres get the season started Wednesday night in Detriot. With the new season comes a new era.

Thomas Vanek is the Sabres captain for home games. On the road, Steve Ott will wear the “C”, including in Wednesday night's season opener in Detroit.

It's a situation of uncertainty as are the future of Buffalo's veterans. Vanek, among others, could be traded before the deadline to make room for a promising core of youngsters.

This is a divisional game with the realignment of the NHL this off season and buffalo is getting a major challenge to start things off. The Sabres haven't won a game in Joe Louis Arena since 1994. At that time, Buffalo's Zemgus Girgensons was five months old. Mikhail Grigorenko and Rasmus Ristolainen weren't even born. They will all be in sweaters Wednesday night. They are all the future of the Sabres.
