RIT basketball beats Alfred State in Harold J. Brodie Tournament

ROCHESTER, NY – Led by four players scoring in double figures, the RIT men's basketball team (3-0) defeated Alfred State 87-66 in the opening game of the 29th Annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament on Friday evening on the floor of Clark Gym. It is the best start for RIT since the 2007-08 season when the Tigers also opened up 3-0.

Sophomore JP Reagan (Cortland, NY/Cortland) led RIT with 21 points and seven rebounds. Jameel Balenton (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers) added 20 points, while freshman forward Sheldon Clay (Detroit, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) scored 12 points. Casey Bobelis (Brandenton, FL/Braden River) scored 10 points off the bench for the Tigers who will face Baptist Bible College, in the championship game at 3 p.m.

The Tigers shot 46.6 percent from the floor on 34-of-73 shooting. RIT was 12-of-34 from behind the arc and made 7-of-10 free throws. RIT held a slight 39-37 rebounding edge, scoring 25 points off of 19 Alfred State turnovers.

Alfred State shot 44.2 percent from the floor on 23-of-52 shooting. The Pioneers shot 4-of-15 from behind the arc led by Tavon Moore on 20 points. Adam Fezza added 12 points, while Tommy Hutson scored 11.

RIT led 49-35 at halftime, closing out the half on a 24-10 run over the final 8:12 of the half. Reagan led RIT with 14 first half points on 4-of-8 shooting. Balenton chipped in 11 points, while Brendan Reinert (Wheatfield, NY/Starpoint) and Casey Bobelis (Brandenton, FL/Braden River) each had six points for RIT who shot 41.9 percent from the floor.

Moore led Alfred State with 16 points in the opening half on 6-of-7 shooting. Hutson added five points, while Adams and Fezza each had for points for Alfred State.

RIT opened the second half on a 12-6 run, taking a 61-41 lead on a three pointer by Balenton. The Tigers led by as many as 21 points, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor in the second half.

Balenton scored 10 of his 21 points in the second half, shooting 4-of-4 from the floor. Clay scored seven second-half points on 3-of-5 shooting.

Baptist Bible defeated Keuka, 87-76 in the first semifinal.

Keuka College will face Alfred State in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. RIT will go for 4-0 on the season at 3 p.m. in the championship game.
