The Red Wings comeback bid fell a run short Wednesday afternoon as Rochester fell 7-6 to the Pawtucket Red Sox in Game Two of their four-game series. The Wings fell behind 7-0 after 3 1/2 innings but chipped away to make things interesting. The last time the Wings overcame a deficit of at least seven runs to win was June 1, 2011 vs. Toledo. Rochester has now dropped three straight after their season-long six-game winning streak.
Dan Rohlfing went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI as he now has picked up a hit in each of his first five starts this season. Over his five-game hit streak, Rohlfing is batting .438 (7-for-16) with a pair of doubles and six RBI...Combined with Eric Fryer, the two Wings catchers on the roster are hitting .394 (13-for-33) with three doubles and 10 RBI on the season.
Wilkin Ramirez picked up three more hits on Wednesday including a double as he now leads the club with five multi-hit games and four doubles this season. On the year, Ramirez is batting .382 (13-for-34) with a .463 OBP.
Eduardo Nunez is headed to the Twins to be the 26th man for Thursday’s doubleheader against Toronto. Nunez went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI on Wednesday and is hitting .318 (7-for-22) in 6 games with the Wings since being traded last week.
Doug Bernier's 4th inning RBI single extended his hitting streak at Frontier Field to 14 games. Over the streak, which dates back to June 13, 2013, Bernier is batting .407 (22-for-54) with 14 RBI. Since last June 1, Bernier is hitting .340 (55-for-162) with 25 RBI as a Red Wing and has recorded a hit in 39 of 46 games started over that span.
The Red Wings Bullpen pitched well in relief of Scott Diamond, tossing five scoreless innings which allowed the Wings to get back in it. The Wings’ bullpen which was rocked for five runs in 3 2/3 innings on Monday, lowered their collective ERA to 2.98 on the season.
