Abby Wambach has carried teams on her back with her dynamic soccer talent. She now embraces the responsibility of carrying a league. At the start of last year’s inaugural National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season, Wambach said it is her job to grow this league. Year two will be telling.

It won’t hurt to have Abby back in the lineup to fill those seats. Wambach will make her Flash season debut on Saturday after missing the first two games with a broken orbital bone. The Flash averaged 4,400 people a game in the first year of the league. That was third best out of the eight teams.

The two previous top women’s professional leagues folded in 2003 and in 2012. Wambach says the health of the NWSL starts with the fans.

Abby Wambach said, “We are in year two, so that is good. You have to have a big picture mindset, but short terms goals, year after year, game after game. I want there to be more fans in the stadium, not less. There has to be more work from the Flash’s perspective to get more fans into the seats.”

The Flash host Portland on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
