If you have your heart set on grilling a lot of fat juicy burgers this Summer, be prepared to pay big bucks for beef. The beef prices are on the rise. The USDA says that going to continue at least through the end of the year.
If you've been in the grocery store you've probably seen the prices continue to climb this year, meat processors are saying beef is up about $2 a pound, and it's likely to go higher by the end of the year.
The USDA says there is less cattle, years of drought have wiped out cattle, in fact the cattle herd is estimated to be the smallest it has been in 60 years. So what does this all mean for you and me. That's what News10NBC asked Ivan Davis, A meat processor in Livingston County.
He says you should get used to the higher price of beef. He says his prices have gone up 20-percent so far this year, and he expects prices to continue to climb. But he says there is a way to save money, he recommends buying in bulk.
“If somebody wants a half of beef we sell it at $2.99 a pound, cut wrap and froze for the hanging weight. you lose about 20-percent but still you can't buy hamburger for $2.99 a pound, and you get you T-bones, your Porterhouse, your Delmonico,” says Davis
The USDA says people are buying less beef. Sales are down about 2-percent this year, and It's research shows people are choosing alternatives like chicken, pork and even vegetarian meats. Davis says get too comfortable the price of pork is not far behind beef costs.
So what else can you do to save?
You can stretch your meat with bread crumbs or oatmeal, instead of buying ground beef, buy chuck roast and grind it yourself or ask the butcher to grind it. Choose more affordable price choice cuts instead of the prime cuts and marinade the meat to make it more tender. And if you need lunch meat, ask for ends. Many deli's will sell you lunch meat ends for far less that the price of a pound of deli meat.
And if all else fails, consider eating a few more meatless meals.
