ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Monday the New York State Thruway Authority voted to start the process that’s expected to lead to the first toll increase on E-ZPass customers since 2010.

News10NBC first told about the proposal last week. (https://www.whec.com/top-news/nys-thurway-authority-proposes-an-increase-in-tolls/)

If this goes through people who drive on the thruway will have to give up a little more money.

Thruway officials said if approved, it would be 14 years since the last New York E-Zpass increase and they say toll prices will remain some of the lowest in the nation.

The hike would start at a 5% increase for New York E-Zpass users starting in January of 2024 and increase another 5% in 2027.

The board is also trying to get more drivers to get an E-Zpass by hiking the toll rate to non-E-Zpass users by 75%.

Thruway officials said the extra money will help improve needed infrastructure and say tolls account for 90% to maintain and operate their systems.

The group said this process will include public hearings and ample opportunities for public comment on the proposed changes.

The public comment period is expected to start in 2023 and last for the next 12 months. At the end of the process, recommendations will be coming back to the board for final approval.
