ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Lunar New Year is January 22 but some local groups are getting a head start on the celebration.

ChildROC and The Chinese School of Rochester hosted a Lunar New Year celebration at the Brighton Memorial Library on Sunday. The event included Bilingual Mandarin-English Storytime, crafts, music, and Chinese painting demonstrations.

It was a celebration both of the incoming year of the rabbit and Chinese culture. Organizers of the celebration say the lunar new year is a really big deal.

“This is the most important festival in China for Chinese people the whole year. This is a time for family getting together,” said event organizer Li Min. “Seeing people you haven’t seen in a long time, just like Christmas time in the United States.”

The celebration included a bilingual story-time in English and Chinese, plus music and dance performances.
