UPDATE: Dwayne Hall Jr., a 38-year-old Rochester resident, is the man who was shot and killed on Genesee Street Wednesday afternoon. Rochester Police say there are still no suspects in custody for his murder.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — What started as a fistfight that broke out between two people Wednesday afternoon turned deadly when one of them pulled out a handgun and shot the other at least once in the torso. The shooter ran away from the scene.
A 38-year-old man was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died.
Captain Frank Umbrino with the Rochester Police Department said when officers responded to shots fired at the corner of Genesee Street and Hopkins Street, they found the man shot in the street.
“The fight escalated; at least one suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the other individual,” Umbrino said.
According to police, the man was shot at least one time in the torso. No arrest has yet been made.
“There were like 15 or 20 people out here. There’s little kids that just got off a bus and a simple fistfight escalates into someone being shot to death. It’s disgusting,” Umbrino said.
It’s a tragedy that neighbors like Bank Fisher said is becoming all too common around Rochester.
“It’s starting to become like stolen cars, stolen lives. People just running around. It’s getting ridiculous,” Fisher said.
That’s why Fisher said he knew what to do when he heard the gunfire.
“I was in the area. I heard the shots. I got ready. I got ready for anything that’s going on. Gun violence is getting crazy,” Fisher said.
In the meantime, Fisher hopes the community will do what they can to protect themselves and their families.
Officers are reviewing nearby security camera footage, and police are calling on the community for help.
“Ya, keep your kids. Hide your kids. Hide your wife. Keep your kids in the house. Gun violence is going crazy,” Fisher said.
