Do the Right Thing: Vayda spoke up when her friend was bullied in a group chat

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — News10NBC is celebrating the latest winner of this semester’s “do the right thing” award. Meet Vayda Burkle, a 7th grader at East Rochester.

The mother of Vayda’s best friend nominated Vayda for the courage she displayed when she witnessed bullying. In June, Vayda was in a group chat where some of the participants started to bully a friend by using hateful language. Vayda recognized that the messages were hurtful and inappropriate, so she immediately stopped the conversation. She also took screenshots and sent them to an adult. Vayda was a true friend and stood up to the bullies, despite receiving backlash. Vayda’s quick actions displayed courage, leadership, and compassion when she quickly stopped the situation from getting out of control.
