LEICESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — One person was killed and another seriously injured in a crash on Route 36 in Livingston County Wednesday evening.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office reports Abu Syed Rezaul Karim, 65, of Buffalo, was driving an SUV carrying four passengers when he turned left in front of a tractor-trailer at around 6 p.m. on Route 36 at Perry Road in Leicester. Deputies say the tractor-trailer was unable to avoid the collision, and after the SUV was hit by the tractor-trailer, it collided with a third vehicle that was stopped at the intersection of Route 36 and Perry Road.

Two people in the back seat were ejected from the SUV. One of them was 58-year-old Syed Kefayet Ullah, of Bangladesh. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman who was ejected was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries. As of Thursday evening, she was still in the ICU in guarded condition.

Karim and the other two passengers in the SUV sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer and the people inside the third vehicle were not hurt.

Karim was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way making a left turn.

The crash is still under investigation, but the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office says preliminary findings don’t suggest anything criminal in nature about the crash.
