ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — They work tirelessly to make our community a better place, and News10NBC honored 10 Rochester-area volunteers for their dedication.

This is the 100th year that ESL Credit Union has sponsored the Jefferson Awards.

This year, 10 people were given the ESL Centennial Award for outstanding volunteerism. Five other volunteers received the highest honor, the ESL Jefferson Award.

All have created amazing programs that make a difference, from helping the homeless to comforting the dying.

"I will sit by the bedside and I’ll hold their hand and they can’t communicate, but I know it means a lot to the family members," hospice volunteer and ESL Jefferson Award winner Ruth Hogan said.

The top award winner, Andrew Evans, created a non-profit that provides construction training at no cost to the students.

Evans will represent the Rochester area at the National Jefferson Awards.
