Consumer Alert: Need new furniture? Memorial Day is the time to shop

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Do you need outdoor furniture? Perhaps a new grill? Now is the time you’ll likely see some of the best deals of the summer. And there’s an art to finding the best deal. You have to buy the right product at the right time. And the great thing about Memorial Day sales is they usually extend through the week, so you have time to shop.

You’ll find the best deals on home furnishings and summer essentials—things like grills, Adirondack chairs, and gardening supplies.

This end-of-May sale is also a great time to look for furniture. Many of the big furniture retailers will offer deep discounts on bedroom sets, dining room sets, sofas, and loveseats. Retail experts say furniture sales are especially good this year because of supply chain issues. In this case, our broken supply chain is benefitting the consumer because past shipping delays have left furniture retailers with stores clogged with old inventory.

So if the kids and the dog have done a number on the sofa, now is the time to scour the deals and find a new one.

Do not buy computers and mobile devices right now. While they may be on sale right now, the discounts will be deeper later in the summer when back-to-school sales are in full gear. And while big-ticket devices like TVs will see several sales during Memorial Day weekend, if you can wait until Prime Day and Christmas in July, the deals will be even better.

So here are some of the guides I use to find the best deals:

Wirecutter – It’s a division of the New York Times and journalists actually check product quality, not just the price. It’s not a good deal if it’s a crummy product.

CNET – It has a list of the seven best deals this Memorial Day.

Deal News – It’s a little gem that’s reader supported and is updated frequently throughout the sale period.

Select on NBC news – Editors scour the best deals and post links on the site.
