Consumer Alert: Treat, but don’t be tricked! Packaging for edible marijuana products made to look like popular kid’s snacks
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— Treat, but don’t be tricked, as News10NBC has a Consumer Alert for you as we head into the Halloweekend.
The New York Attorney General’s Office is warning parents about products that look like standard snack foods and candy, but actually contain marijuana and high levels of THC.
The AG’s office shared photos of some of the snacks, which include spins on snacks like Oreo cookies or Sour Patch Kids. The products themselves, are illegal and unregulated in the state. Although the state legalized adult-use cannabis earlier this year, cannabis products for non-medical use are not yet being sold legally in the state.
A way to spot the difference in the products is by checking to see if the bag has a small "THC" branding in the corner.
If the snacks are accidentally eaten by children, the office says the high levels can lead to an accidental overdose. If your child has become sick from eating the snacks, you’re encouraged to call the New York Regional Poison Control Centers at 1-800-222-1222.
