Delta variant drives 95% of NY infection as hospitalizations, deaths spike

NEW YORK (WHEC) — We’re learning troubling new details about the impact the delta variant is having here in New York State.
According to state officials, the highly contagious delta variant represents about 95% of positive covid samples collected this month across the state.
On Wednesday, state officials announced a months-long single-day high of 20 virus deaths.
Hospitalizations have also soared this month. There are now more than 1,800 patients, which is a 135% increase in just the last 17 days.
The state hasn’t seen these numbers since mid-May.
