GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — Deputies say a car was “demolished” after it was hit by a box truck on the new flyover on I-390 South in Gates Tuesday evening, but luckily, its driver is expected to survive.

It happened at around 5:30 p.m. when the car, disabled, came to a rest and was partially blocking the left lane. That’s when deputies say the box truck hit the car from the rear.

The truck pushed the car for about 150 feet before coming to rest.

Deputies say the driver of the car, a 50-year-old man from Greece, was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The box truck driver was not hurt, but deputies say the truck is inoperable after the crash.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says its Commercial Vehicle Unit issued several transportation law violations to the truck driver and his parent company.

Deputies say drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.

The flyover was closed for just under four hours as crews cleaned up and investigated but has since reopened.
