Deputies: Perinton man charged DWI, other charges after hitting person and then crashing car

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— Deputies say a Perinton man is facing multiple charges including DWI as he’s accused of hitting somebody with his car then and taking off and crashing his car Saturday afternoon.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says 36-year-old Eric Benton was drunk when he hit the person in the Perinton Square Mall Parking lot just after 1:45 p.m. Witnesses told deputies Benton kept driving and then hit another car on Route 250, which is right next to the mall.

A short time later, MCSO says Benton was speeding on 250 (Mosley Road) near Ayrault Road when he drove off a curve and hit a bunch of trees. Benton was trapped in his car and had to be rescued by firefighters.

Benton was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for evaluation of minor injuries. The person deputies say he hit had a minor leg injury and was also treated at the hospital. The driver of the car Benton struck was also treated as a precaution.

Benton was is charged with DWI, leaving the scene of a crash, third-degree assault, and then several traffic and driving violations. He was issued an appearance ticket and will appear in Perinton Town Court at a later date.
