EF-2 Tornado causes damage in Wyoming County this morning

JAVA, N.Y. (WHEC) — The National Weather Service confirms an EF-2 tornado touched down in Wyoming County this morning, causing damage to several structures and downed trees.

A tornado touched down in Wyoming County at approximately 10:40 a.m. in the town of Java just south of the intersection of NY Route 78 and Chaffee Rd.

The tornado then moved along an east-northeast path near NY Route 78 for approximately 10 miles before dissipating near Gainesville just west of NY Route 19 at about 10:55 a.m. The tornado was on the ground for approximately 15 minutes.

The tornado reached a maximum intensity of EF-2, with winds of 115 mph. The maximum path width was about 200 yards.

The tornado did significant damage to a barn, with one portion of the barn being displaced 20 to 30 yards, and another portion sustaining significant damage. Trees were blown down on several residences along the path, producing damage to homes. Roof and shingle damage was noted on several other residences along the path of the tornado. Numerous trees and powerlines were down along the path.
