ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A new mural honoring the legacy of abolitionist Frederick Douglass was unveiled Friday morning at the very airport mentioning his name, the Frederick Douglass – Greater Rochester International Airport.
Some descendants of Douglass came to Rochester for the event.
Adam Bello, the Monroe County Executive, says he hopes the mural will be a reminder to the people and visitors of Rochester of what Douglass brought to the community and the world as a whole.

"It is an honor to have the last thing I do before leaving Rochester, is to participate in the unveiling of this mural, which I believe will help so many generations from here until the end of time, know more about their history, know more about the great leaders that get us here, and I just hope that one young man will look at this mural, and say ‘You know what? I can be somebody.’," said Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin.
Benjamin also said he hopes the mural "amplifies" Douglass’s presence for the more than two million people who travel through the airport every year.
