ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — It’s not the worst but New York always ranks near the top of the list for prices at the pump and taxes on gas.

A viewer named Mike asked News10NBC’s Brennan Somers: While the idea has been raised of suspending the federal tax on gasoline, there are more taxes than that on fuel. These taxes used to be shown at the pump years ago, but they are not shown now. Just what are all the taxes on gasoline?

For starters, let us show you what the U.S. Energy Information Administration lays out as part of its independent research.

Taxes and fees per gallon? The federal rate is a little more than 18 cents.

The average of total state taxes comes in at 30 cents on the gallon.

The group reports "State taxes include rates of general application including, but not limited to, excise taxes, environmental taxes, special taxes, and inspection fees, but they exclude state taxes based on gross or net receipts. State taxes do not include county and local taxes."

So what all are you paying for? Here’s the breakdown on the current average of $3.75 a gallon.

The combined sales tax rate for Monroe County is 8% split evenly between the county and the state. Add it all up and that puts you at more than 70 cents just on taxes and fees bringing us to $3.75.
