Good Question: Why does the thruway seem to divide winter weather?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — This pops up from time to time, especially at this point of the year getting into winter.

For this "Good Question" we’re basically looking at the haves and have nots when it comes to snow. Some people think what you get really depends on where you live.

Here are two examples of recent emails sent to News10NBC’s Brennan Somers:

  • How does the weather know north of 104 or south of the thruway?
  • Why do lake snow events rarely make very far south of the NYS thruway corridor? Snow seems to taper off rapidly once you cross I-90.

So, how much is there to this belief that the thruway really is a dividing line for mother nature in this part of NY?

First Alert Meteorologist Alex Bielfeld went through trends and explains why most of the snow does stay north of the thruway in the video above.
