ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – Mayor Evans proclaimed June Caribbean Heritage Month on Wednesday.

Rochester and Monroe County leaders met in the City Hall Atrium for the ceremony.

Caribbean Heritage Month became nationally recognized back in 2006, and this is the 11th year it is being celebrated here in Rochester.

Danielle King, Rochester West Indian Festival organization Interim President said, "as we know, culture is what shapes a society, the tradition, values, creeds, individuals live by are the core and foundation. The foundation of West Indian culture is fortified with dedication and relentless ambition."
