RPD: Deadly shooting on Rochester’s north side believed to be result of carjacking

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Rochester Police Department says its investigators believe the deadly shooting on Rochester’s north side early Tuesday morning was the result of a carjacking.
It happened at around 12:20 a.m. on Peckham Street, which is off of Hudson Avenue.
Police say 30-year-old Shafi Mutombo was driving a co-worker home when they were confronted by an unknown suspect or suspects and Mutombo was shot at least once in the upper body. He was pronounced dead on scene.
Police say Mutombo’s co-worker was not injured.
Community outreach teams, including Should Never Use Guns (SNUG) were back in the neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, talking to people who live in the area and handing out flyers door-to-door and trying to make the community feel safe.

News10NBC’s Stephanie Duprey spoke to one neighbor who was scared to open her front door when we knocked. SNUG leader Toni Nelson said there is one home on that street that the community fears.
"Our community is scared because some of it is beefs, but some of it happens because someone felt like doing something," Nelson said. "I don’t blame her for being afraid, if something happens outside your house, that’s not the first incident that’s happened on that street by that house. The community is afraid, so we have to learn to speak up and show up and let people know we’re going to take our communities back.”
Nelson said SNUG periodically goes door-to-door in what they call "target areas".
“We have target areas for our program, one of which is 14621 and the other is 14619 right now so we’re out here consistently even when there isn’t a shooting, to make the community feel safe,” Nelson said.
Back in November, a 15-year-old was shot and killed on Peckham Street in the same area.
"That’s senseless, it’s absolutely senseless, there was no reason to try and rob or carjack that man, and now he’s gone from his family,” Nelson said.
