ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A 32-year-old woman shot Sunday afternoon in Rochester ended up dying from her injuries.

Rochester Police say Charlotte Thomas of Rochester died at Strong Memorial Hospital around 10 p.m. Sunday night.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Lyell Avenue and Child Street just before 5 p.m.

Rochester Police were originally called to what they’ve believed was a person hit by a car, but now believe there was some sort of altercation.

Rochester Mayor Mailk Evans spoke about the shooting on Monday morning.

"I think it’s a very sad situation," Evans said. "I said growing up it was not often that we saw a lot of women being shot. This is a newer phenomenon that we’re seeing and it’s something that concerns us and we need to make sure that we focus in on guns in Rochester and we find different ways to handle disputes where people do not feel as though they need to resort to guns. That was very sad to hear about someone being gunned down in the middle of the street in 0-degree temperatures."

The investigation is still ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to call 911.
