(NBCNC) — As many children head back to school, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released new data about COVID-19 in kids.
The agency reported more than 277,000 school-aged children were diagnosed with coronavirus between March 1 and Sept. 19 of this year.
Infection rates were twice as high in children between 12 and 17 years old as those between ages 5 and 11.
Pediatric cases peaked in July, decreased in August and plateaued in September.
Underlying conditions were more common among children who were hospitalized, admitted to intensive care or died from COVID-19.
