Dansville Central School District transitioning to remote learning through November

DANSVILLE, N.Y. (WHEC) — Due to COVID-19 cases, the Dansville Central School District is transitioning to remote learning on Monday.

The change is expected to last until Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The district will be closed Friday so that buildings and buses can be cleaned and disinfected.

The district said as of Thursday, there were 33 students and 11 employees who have tested positive for COVID-19, the Dansville area has the highest number of positives it has had since the pandemic began and it’s expecting cases to spike because of Thanksgiving.

“We’ve had so many absences between positives and quarantines in key positions like school bus drivers and teachers that we found ourselves, we could no longer sustain operations and do it in a way that would best serve our students,” Dansville Superintendent Dr. Paul J. Alioto told News10NBC.

Ten and a half percent of COVID tests in Livingston County are now coming back positive.

“We are seeing a lot of household spread we are not seeing a lot of classroom spread within the confines of the classroom but we do see some spread among social activities in the community,” explained Public Health Director Jennifer Rodriquez. “Dansville, in particular, had two large-scale community events last week.”

There’s at least a silver lining to the spread.

“Right now, anywhere between 30 and 40% of our cases are in people who have been vaccinated. Our breakthrough cases, those folks are not having a lot of symptoms. They’re not having to go to the doctor, fairly mild to moderate symptoms if any and truthfully a lot of our cases end up being asymptomatic,” Rodriquez said.
