ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Rita Hirschler celebrated her 104th birthday by receiving a COVID-19 vaccine Friday.
Hirschler lives at the Edna Tina Wilson Living Center.
Staff and residents who wanted the vaccine were able to get the first dose Thursday.
"I asked her, 'You know, you're going to get the vaccine today and tomorrow's your birthday?' She just kept saying, 'Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me,' so I said, 'Why is this so important?' and she says, 'You have to take care of yourself and I take care of myself, and that's why I'm 104,'" Recreation Manager Lisa Richards said.
"It's great that Rochester Regional and the staff at Edna Tina have such a great handle on everything to keep her safe," Hirschler's youngest grandchild, Sandra Whitcomb, said.
Hirschler's family says they feel a great deal of relief that she got the vaccine and can't wait to see her in person.
