ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and your mammogram gives you the best chance for a cure because you’re more likely to catch cancer early. That’s why the information Livingston County health leaders released Monday is so troubling.

They’re seeing a dramatic drop in preventative screenings, including a 25% drop in the number of mammograms. Elizabeth Wende in Monroe County is also seeing fewer women coming in for screenings, but Dr. Kim Kilby, a family and preventative medicine physician with MVP Health Care says don’t let COVID-19 keep you from getting crucial care.

"A mammogram is a great option where you can have your visit virtually, get the order for the mammogram, schedule your mammogram so the only appointment that you have to physically show up for is your mammogram and get that done. But the order and all the prep and risk assessment can happen virtually via conversation. That’s a really important area where telemedicine can really help," Kilby said. “And the other important preventative measure that’s being missed right now are childhood vaccines and well-child visits… I would encourage you to call your kids’ doctor and find out what they’re doing. COVID-19 is not a reason for you to avoid getting your child the vaccines they’re due for”

Kilby also points out that your MVP Health Care is holding flu shot clinics where you can get a free flu shot no matter what kind of insurance you carry.

There are also several breast cancer awareness and screening events being held across the Rochester area.

Wende is holding an event for women without health insurance. They’ll be able to get a free mammogram. You need to make an appointment. Click here for more information.
