(NBCNC) — Federal health officials say the risk of becoming infected with COVID-19 through a contaminated surface is low.

According to new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular cleaning with just soap or detergent is enough to cut the risk of infection from contaminated surfaces, rather than using a disinfectant.

However, the CDC says frequently touched surfaces should be cleaned at least once a day, and if someone in your house has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, all surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected.

The CDC says the best way to prevent infection from surfaces is to regularly wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.
