ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Finger Lakes region meets all seven metrics needed to begin reopening on Friday, May 15.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo also announced during his daily briefing Monday that the Southern Tier and Mohawk Valley regions would be able to reopen. According to the governor's office, Central New York is one metric short. View the state's Regional Monitoring Dashboard to see where all regions currently stand.
The news comes ahead of the NY PAUSE order’s expiration date scheduled for this Friday. Last week, the CEO and president of the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce Bob Duffy outlined the governor’s four-step reopening plan.
The first businesses that can open will include construction, manufacturing and retail with curb-side pickup. Additionally, landscaping and gardening businesses and drive-in theaters can open statewide, the governor said. Click here for a detailed list of businesses that can reopen during phase one.
In a nod to social activities, Cuomo said the state also is relaxing restrictions on low-risk outdoor activities such as tennis.
In order to begin the process, businesses must put safety plans in place, employees must be socially distanced and workspaces might need to be shifted.
Cuomo explained that we are just about where we were when this all started in March, and he emphasized the importance of reopening safely.
Two weeks ago, the governor announced that schools would remain closed for the rest of the academic year.
"We are not opening schools for the remainder of the academic year," Cuomo reconfirmed on Monday. "Arranging childcare for those who need it will be the responsibility of the regional councils."
Each region will have a "regional control room" to ensure the areas stay within the seven metrics during the reopening process. In April, Cuomo announced Duffy as the head of the Finger Lakes regional effort.
