(WHEC) — Unemployed New Yorkers are starting to see the first round of payments from the Federal Lost Wage Assistance program.

Three $300 payments have been released to those who were pre-qualified or who certified by Sept. 15. FEMA initially approved states for the first three weeks of the program, which is retroactive to Aug. 1st.

So, in New York, that means the benefit weeks ending Aug. 2, Aug. 9, and Aug. 16 are included. Anyone who was unemployed at that time because of COVID-19 should qualify for the payments.

Many New Yorkers have noticed that the unemployed in other states are getting more than 3 payments and have asked News10NBC whether there will be a second round of payments here.

A spokeswoman for the NYS Department of Labor said, “The NYS DOL has applied for the additional three weeks of Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) allowed by the federal government. We are waiting for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to give final approval for the funding.”

On Thursday, when contacted by News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke, FEMA said the funding for a second round of payments in New York is a go.

A spokesperson said, “Regardless of where the states and territories are in their process to receive and distribute the FEMA funding, FEMA will fund six weeks in $300 supplemental unemployment benefits to every state and territory that has applied for this assistance by Sept. 10. No new/initial applications will be accepted since the Sept. 10 deadline has passed, however states/territories may continue to submit requests for additional weeks, up to week 6, after Sept.10.”

Presumably, those payments in New York would cover the weeks ending Aug.23, Aug. 30 and Sept. 6 but so far, NYSDOL has not laid out a timeline as to when it will be able to process that second round of payments and distribute them.

If you believe you are eligible for LWA payments and you don’t see them pending in your account by Friday evening, you may need to re-certify for certain weeks.

To certify, you need to fill out & submit a DocuSign email sent to NYSDOL. Be sure to check for it in your spam inbox.

If you did not receive a DocuSign, call 833-491-0632 to certify.

After certifying, payments will be released in 1-2 business days if you are eligible.
